1. Overall Introduction

The total area of Nanhu Lake Wetland is about 6 km2, whose wetland park covers an area of 4.79 km2 and central area covers an area of 4.21 km2. Depending on its unique natural resources and geographic position, by full operation of wetland eco-restoring projects such as around-lake ecological corridor construction, lakeshore form adjustment, returning fish pond to lake, lakebed dredging, afforestation and beautification, wetland restoration, lake embankment landscape creation and rural sightseeing and leisure etc., Nanhu Lake Wetland has formed a natural ecological wetland that integrates ecological wetlands, leisure experience, landscape auxiliary facility and modern agricultural demonstration.


2. Characteristic Introduction
(1) Wetland Creative Pavilion

Sticking to the main keynote of  “creativity”, the pavilion fully displays the advanced concepts, technologies, devices and ecological industry chains about the protection, restoration and utilization of wetland in a national level, which raises the public participation in ecological environmental protection and also serves as a unique, advanced and international exhibition platform for science popularization and propaganda of Nanhu Lake Wetland Park, as well as The 10th INTECOL International Wetlands Conference.

(2) Typical Laky Wetland Restoration Model
Blooming of algae in Nanhu Lake results in low water transparency. During the lake restoration, the healthy laky wetland ecosystem structure of Taihu Lake Basin in 1960s was used for reference. Restoring the community of herbivorous macrozooplankton to strengthen zooplankton’s grazing and consumption of algae, control the growth of algae, improve the water quality, raise the water transparency and provide conditions for the growth of submerged plants. After restoration, the water quality of Nanhu Lake was raise from Class V to Class III with COD, Total Phosphorus and Total Nitrogen reaching 18.5 mg/L, 0.51 mg/L, 0.05 mg/L respectively.


(3)Returning Fishpond to Wetland Project
The project has restored and reconstructed three different types of swamp wetland restoration model, which are called forested swamp wetland, herbaceous swamp wetland and ecological percolation island wetland. The restoration of these swamp wetland has made great contribution to expanding the acreage of natural wetland, improving regional water quality and raising wetland biodiversity.
Forested Swamp Wetland: culture ponds with 4 meters depth were transformed into forest swamp, usually in 0.5-1m depth water. Taxodium ascendens and other hydrophytes are planted, which not only remarkably restores the wetland environment, but also attracts large amount of birds.

Herbaceous Swamp Wetland: we conserve the fishponds texture, and pile the dredged mud into new embankments, dividing the fishponds into smaller blocks. The drainage of those blocks are connected by culvert pipes. By purification effects of wetland plants and microbial in four blocks, water quality is improve from Class V to III. 


Ecological Percolation Island Wetland: during the ecological restoration process, we make use of current pond bank to conduct topography reform, lower the ponds bank to benefit Taxodium ascendens growing; utilize the dredged mud and soil to build ecological percolation islands. We also plant trees and shrubs around the island edges, and hydrophytes circulated the islands to in situ purify the mud water seepage. By means of the combined effect of these plants, mud water seepage will be purified, and the secondary pollution will be prevented.
